Over 70,000 Houstonians a year are trapped in our system, too poor to afford an attorney.

The Problem

Annually, over 70,000 Houstonians, who are too poor to afford legal counsel, face criminal accusations. It is indisputable that mass incarceration is an epidemic plaguing the most vulnerable parts of our country.

Currently, Harris County indigent defense system does not provide adequate advocacy for the majority of those in need. In 2017, Harris County had about 71,000 indigent cases. At least 75% of those were given to attorneys who exceed the state recommended caseload limit.

of those trapped in our system are receiving inadequate defense. To give an example of the amount, that is 50,000 people or the same size of Texas A&M College Station undergraduate enrollment.

The Restoring Justice Model

Restoring Justice is the only 501(c)(3) NPO operating in Texas to assist marginalized communities with holistic legal support, bail bonds, social services and trauma care. We believe holistic, loving, and client-centered representation by the local community is the only solution to mass incarceration.

We fight for the right to prevent unnecessary and wrongful incarceration while changing fear-based perceptions in our system to love-based hope. We provide individualized care to lift people out of our system, while simultaneously reforming our system to one of restorative justice, based in making communities whole again.

“I have a dream that we won’t have to talk about ‘restorative justice’ because it will be understood that true justice is about restoration, and about transformation. I have a dream.”

- Howard Zehr

legal representation

We provide client-centered, holistic trial-level representation for accused people who cannot afford nor have the system provide adequate counsel, therefore stuck in Harris County Jail.

adelphoi program

The marginalized are often pushed against a wall by society, but volunteers will join them at this wall and always stand in their corner for and with them, regardless of past, present and future mistakes.

social services

Each client is matched with a loving, client-centered social worker who walks and guides them through any barriers they may face. They are then given adequate resources to overcome such obstacles.

counseling and healing circles

Through it’s unique partnership, every client is offered free therapy as they navigate the trauma associated with facing criminal accusations. Affected family and community members of this trauma are also served through Healing Circles.

Willey had leaned generally in favor of the death penalty, but the consequences of shoddy defense work made him do an about-face…When Willey visited Wilson on death row, he was struck by his positive outlook. “You’re not giving up,” Willey remembers thinking.
